iPad 5 case leak points to iPad-mini style design

With the iPad 5 almost definitely going to be released this year, the rumours now are all around the look and specification of Apple's new tablet. One of the consistent themes has been that the iPad Mini will provide the inspiration for the iPad 5. It makes a lot of sense, as the existing iPad design has been around since the iPad 2 and stuck for the most recent model, the iPad 4, and isn't quite as fresh-looking as the newer smaller tablet.

While we've only seen rumours and some mock-ups suggesting the new design route, people have recently been getting more excited as new case mock-ups have been spotted that seem to confirm the new style.

Case manufacturers often get case specs early on, so that they can start the manufacturing process and be ready when the new tablet is launched. While this can be a bit of a gamble, designing a case without seeing the product, the companies that get it right have an early head-start and can make a killing from the first sales.

First, BGR reported images found on Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce site, seemed to confirm that the iPad 5 would be styled on the iPad Mini.

Secondly, Apple accessory manufacturer MiniSuit sent images of its new case designs to MacRumors. It told the site that the designs are based on leaked specifications, which it believes are accurate. As you can see from the image below, the iPad 5 case certainly follows the design cues for the iPad Mini.

The leaked case pictures have also fuelled speculation that the iPad 5 will be launched in June. Case manufacturers tend to only start developing prototypes close to launch, when the details and specifications are a bit more certain. With cases coming out now, an October launch for the iPad 5, as some sites have mooted, would be too late, but June would be spot on.

“Doubtlessly, [Apple's iPad mini is] beautiful to hold and use, and for the last few months, it has been reported that the full-sized iPad may be treated to similar design traits,” Ben Reid reports for Redmond Pie.

“Following on from the supposed Retina iPad mini case leaks, the first cases of a redesigned iPad 5 have leaked via case maker MiniSuit, which seem to further substantiate the notion of the iPad mini and regular iPad adopting a uniform look moving forward,” Reid reports. “The leaked iPad 5 case is slimmer than that of the iPad 4, and thus as well as looking as though it would house a design reflective of the iPad mini.”

5th-gen iPad case leak hints at a major redesign

Apple may have to compensate iPad 3 owners in Brazil

Apple is being sued for making the iPad 3 obsolete with the launch of the iPad 4

Apple's not having a good time in Brazil right now. It recently lost the exclusive rights to the name iPhone to a company that makes Android phones, and now it is being sued for launching the fourth generation iPad so soon after the third generation 'New iPad'. If Apple loses the suit it may be forced to compensate iPad 3 owners in the country.

Apple is under fire for not implementing all of the technology updates of the fourth generation model in the third generation model, appeared. The Brazilian Institute of Politics and Law Software (IBDI)alleges that Apple's failure to do so "Amounts to planned obsolescence and unfair business practices."

IBDI attorney Sergio Palomares said: "Consumers thought [they were] buying high-end equipment, not knowing [it] was already an obsolete version," is the translation of the report in Brazil's Jornal do Comrciao.

If Apple is found guilty of unfair business practices, the company could be forced to compensate all Brazilian customers who bought the third-generation iPad, writes Apple Insider.

When the iPad 3 launched, the company faced pressure because the device, while advertised as being 4G capable, didn't work on 4G networks around the world, and many countries didn't offer 4G. For example, Apple had to defend its 4G branding in Australia when at the end of March, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took Apple to the Federal Court in Melbourne for allegedly violating the conditions of the Australian Consumer Law.

Eventually, following accusations in the UK and Australia that Apple had been misleading customers about the tablet's capabilities, Apple scrapped the 4G in the description of the product.

iPad 5 Rumors: New Case, New iPad Coming?

It’s been about a year since Apple released its third-generation iPad, which was the company’s first tablet with a built-in Retina display. Apple has released a faster and more powerful full-sized iPad since then – the iPad 4 with Retina display in October – but it’s a new year, which means Apple is expected to release yet another tablet in the coming months.

It’s unlikely Apple will release a fifth-generation iPad (or “iPad 5”) this month, just four months after the iPad 4 debuted – although Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White predicts the contrary  – but considering the growing number of reports and rumors about the next-gen slate, it’s likely the release date could arrive sooner rather than later. One manufacturing company named MiniSuit has even been so bold as to create a case for the iPad 5, based on features and specs from what the site claims is a reliable source, and send it to MacRumors for publication.

For months, reports have claimed the iPad 5 will look and feel like the first-generation iPad Mini, with its anodized aluminum enclosure, diamond-cut chamfered edges, altered speaker design, and most notably, its smaller side bezels, which reduce the tablet’s heft while maintaining the same screen size. Furthermore, most reliable sources, including KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, said the iPad 5 would be “significantly lighter and slimmer” than last year’s 9.7-inch Apple tablets. The cases released by MiniSuit this past week reflect all of these features and specs to a T.

The MiniSuit cases showcase a slightly smaller iPad – which makes sense, given the smaller side bezels – as well as a new speaker design and an extra hole on the back for the microphone, which has been relocated from the top of the tablet to the back.

Apple’s iPad 5: What Features Will It Include?

Back in November, China-based DigiTimes reported on Apple’s plans to release its next generation of iOS devices, including a new iPhone and a new iPad, “around the middle of 2013.” While rumors about the iPad Mini 2 are almost solely focused on its potential Retina display, Apple’s next-gen 9.7-inch iPad will also reportedly be centered around a new display.

Even though the in-cell technologies used to create the iPhone 5’s display made the screen thinner, brighter and stronger, Apple is apparently very interested in switching to Sharp’s ultra-thin IGZO technology.

A Jan. 3 report by the China Times said Apple might switch to a "Touch On Display" panel currently in development at one of its suppliers, Taiwan-based Innolux Corp. (TPE:3481), which has reportedly licensed Sharp's proprietary IGZO display technology. Whether or not Apple specifically chooses Innolux to make screens for its next round of iOS devices, however, the company will likely feature IGZO display technology in its next iPad.

In late December, Asymco analyst Horace Dediu and DigiTimes both mentioned Apple’s alleged investment in the ultrathin IGZO displays produced by Sharp, predicting the inclusion of the technology in Apple’s next batch of iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. Dediu also pointed to Apple’s recent $2.3 billion investment in “product tooling, manufacturing process equipment, and infrastructure,” believing the cash was used to help bail out Sharp, which had been in financial straits last year. Sharp is reportedly going “all in” on IGZO technology, so it’s possible Apple saved Sharp to leverage its investment in the next generation of displays.

As noted by Tom's Hardware, the IGZO display is not only thin and tough, but also can handle even higher screen densities than Apple’s Retina display, which is visually stunning on its own. IGZO displays can reportedly handle display densities north of 330 ppi: In comparison, the new iPad 4 can only achieve 264 ppi.

One of the advantages of IGZO display technology is its lower power consumption. Most Apple products, from the iPhone 5 to the iPad 4, require cartoonishly large batteries to achieve just eight hours of power — this is because current-gen Retina displays are extremely power-hungry. If Apple wanted its iPad 5 to not only last longer during the day but also to charge faster when plugged in, IGZO seems the way to go.

Besides the display, we don’t know much about the iPad 5, but we have seen a few interesting iPad patents for a built-in stand, and backside controls for gaming. We expect Apple to release the iPad 5 between June and September 2013.

Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads in the company's fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 29.

Self-Driving Nissan Leaf Controlled From iPad (4 VIDEOS)

Following Google’s early lead in self-driving vehicles, and adding a twist, Oxford University is testing a driverless Nissan Leaf electric vehicle. It is controlled by an iPad which enables a person to take over the car or switch to “auto drive,” which permits the robot system to drive itself. The system is being tested in Begbroke Science Park, near Oxford. The next stage of research involves teaching the robot to understand complex traffic flows, and to decide the best routes to take, according to Dr. Ingmar Posner, who is co-leading the project

Self-driving cars have been under development for a while, and they do work. However, would they actually provide a net safety benefit?

Automation in general has come a long way, and is now, in many cases, very accurately done. Factory machinery now achieves unparalleled consistency and high accuracy. A factory machine can be like having the perfect employee that never slacks off, and always exercises the best practices, no matter how tedious they may be.

But let us explore the safety of this concept by first considering the nature of most automobile accidents.
